Patton College’s Reading Education program ranked one of nation’s 10 best

Ohio University’s online masters in Reading and Literacy Education program has been named one of the nations 10 best by OnlineMasters.com, which ranks programs using statistical and qualitative data from hiring managers, current students, noteworthy alumni, and hundreds of independent program rankings, among other metrics. The Patton College of Education ranked tenth out of 50 schools. 

It is an honor to have our Reading and Literacy Education program recognized as a top online program,said Renée A. Middleton, dean of The Patton College. Our faculty and staff have worked tirelessly to develop and implement comprehensive online programs that benefit students all over the world. This ranking is validation of that work. 

The program was also deemed Best for Licensed Teachers, as it was designed specifically for licensed teachers seeking to further their knowledge and understanding of reading development. Graduates emerge with skills to assume specialist roles in their respective schools.

OnlineMasters.com Program Recognition Manager Barbara Montgomery wrote that OHIOs Reading and Literacy Education is one of the best of the bestin the United States and provides quality education to help students with their career aspirations.

As a faculty, we have worked very hard to make this the best program possible,” said Dr. Sara Helfrich, Teacher Education associate professor and Literacy Program Coordinator. “It has grown from one faculty member redeveloping coursework for an online offering seven years ago to multiple faculty members reflecting on and redesigning coursework to meet evolving reading standards, the changing needs of our students, and the demands of the teaching profession. It is an honor to be recognized for what we do every day.

The program has received national accolades in the past. In 2018, it was ranked in the top 20 by Best Value Schools, which considered programs with average tuition rates of $20,000 a year or less. Schools were ranked based on program popularity, overall strength of online teacher education programs, accreditation, and affordability.

The Patton College ranked 18th.
