Summary of Work:

My research focuses on muscle health. We study how genes, nutrients, toxins, and the environment combine to promote healthy and unhealthy muscles. Our work uses animal models such as worms (C. elegans) and rodents (mice and rats) as well as human subjects. Examples of on-going projects include understanding the role of sulphur in mitochondrial diseases; discovering novel diagnostics and treatments for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD); understanding and countering neuromuscular decline with age; understanding and countering neuromuscular decline with spaceflight; understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying loss of muscle function with lack of use.
