(ATHENS, Ohio—May 13, 2013) Seven Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) students have been elected to leadership positions within national professional organizations.

“These students’ achievements are a testament to their commitment to excellence both inside and outside the classroom, and I am tremendously proud of each of them,” said Executive Dean Kenneth Johnson, D.O. “Being elected to these positions is a great personal achievement. I look forward to working with them now and in the future as we all do our part to move our profession forward.”

Simon Fraser, OMS II, the 2012-2013 president of OU-HCOM’s Student Government Association, was elected as national parliamentarian at last month’s Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents (COSGP) meeting in Baltimore.

“Simon is the first SGA president in the six years I’ve been here to be elected to the COSGP board,” said Holly Jacobs, associate director of student affairs at OU-HCOM.

Fraser’s duties as national parliamentarian include presiding over each COSGP meeting and facilitating discussion. “But most importantly, I am also chair of the legislative committee within COSGP and work closely with the legislative relations department of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine,” Fraser said.

“Having someone from OU-HCOM on any national position is a tremendous tribute to our school and the quality of students we are attracting here. It allows our voice to be heard along with continued national recognition and exposure,” Fraser added. “It is amazing to see how involved our students are outside of academics. I am always proud being a student here at OU-HCOM, and this just reiterates how special this place really is.”

Student appointments to key positions with national organizations for the upcoming year include:

Kaitlin Fries, OMS II, secretary, American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians (ACOEP).

Bret Nolan, OMS II, student board of trustee member, American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians’ (ACOP), two-year term.

·         Matthew Adkins, OMS III, chair, American Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) Community and Environmental Health Action Committee.

·         Carrie Gray Dunham, OMS III, national exchange officer, International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations.

·         Emilie Prot, OMS III, education coordinator, AMSA’s Global Health Action Committee.

·         Eric Questel, OMS II, LGBT programming coordinator, AMSA’s Gender and Sexuality Action Committee.
