Heritage College faculty member named top mentor to D.O. students

(ATHENS, Ohio—Nov. 4, 2014) A physician and faculty member at Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine has been recognized as the nation’s top mentor to osteopathic medical students.

Timothy Law, D.O., M.B.A., was named 2014 Mentor of the Year by the American Osteopathic Association during the group’s annual OMED Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition, which took place Oct. 25-29 in Seattle. Law, a 1994 graduate of the Heritage College, is an assistant professor of family medicine, director of the college’s Rural and Urban Scholars Pathways program, and medical director for its Clinical and Translational Research Unit.

Heritage College Executive Dean Kenneth Johnson, D.O., praised Law’s work. “We at the Heritage College are exceptionally proud of Dr. Law,” Johnson said. “Our students have known firsthand about his wonderful mentoring skills for years, and it’s great to see him get recognition for them at a national level.”

Established in 2005, the AOA’ s Mentor of the Year program honors those who help shape the future of the osteopathic medical profession through their involvement with students and young osteopathic physicians.

A committee of osteopathic medical students, post-doctoral trainees and new physicians in practice chose Law from a field of 168 D.O. nominees to receive the award. Three separate nominations were submitted on his behalf. The AOA's letter informing him he'd won said, “The narratives your mentees provided, about how you have influenced their careers, truly touched the Mentor of the Year Selection Committee.”

Law said he’s been thanked for “giving back” to the osteopathic medical profession, but he considers his mentoring more as necessary work to lead it forward.

“Our profession has no future without the development of the next generation of D.O.s,” he said. “We have an amazing resource and some of the best students I have seen in my career since returning as a faculty member to our college.”
