Carlsen becomes chair of NBOME

(ATHENS, Ohio — Feb. 7, 2014) Wayne Carlsen, D.O., FACOI, senior associate dean and associate professor of geriatric medicine/gerontology at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, was sworn in as board chair for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners at its annual meeting in December.

Since 1989, Dr. Carlsen has held many roles with the NBOME, an organization that assesses competencies of osteopathic medical professionals, including serving on a variety of exam construction and item review committees. He has served on the NBOME Board of Directors since 2005 and was elected vice chair in December 2011.

As chairman, Dr. Carlsen will lead the NBOME governing body in working with the organization’s president and CEO, coordinating board committees, and planning and conducting two board meetings each year. He will also collaborate with NBOME senior staff and board officers to represent the association at meetings across the United States.

“It is a career capstone for me to assume this leadership role for NBOME,” said Dr. Carlsen. “I look forward to being able to serve as chair for the next two years as we move forward to make key changes to our strategic plan, and reach out to work collaboratively with our partners and stakeholders to provide innovative assessment services to our customers.”

He was sworn in as board chair during NBOME’s annual meeting in Key Largo, Fla., by Immediate Past Chair Janice Knebl, D.O., MBA, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Geriatrics/Department of Medicine at the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine/University of North Texas Science Center at Fort Worth.

In addition to his role as senior associate dean and associate professor, Dr. Carlsen serves as the medical director of the Heritage College’s Community Health Programs and Area Health Education Center. Throughout his years as a practicing geriatrician, he has served as the medical director for several skilled nursing facilities across Ohio. Dr. Carlsen has been an Ohio University employee since 1993.
