“Dinosaur Day” comes to kids’ Discovery Museum on Saturday
Renowned lecturer to speak with dinosaur puzzles, crafts and activities
(ATHENS, Ohio – Dec. 4, 2012) The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery (OVMoD) is hosting a special event on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be all things dinosaur (for all ages) at the museum, including a “Dinosaurs Up Close” presentation at 11 a.m. with Lawrence Witmer, Ph.D., along with members of the WitmerLab at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM).
“Southeast Ohio doesn’t really have a full-blown natural history museum,” said Dr. Witmer, professor of anatomy and Chang professor of paleontology, “and so we’re really happy that my lab and Ohio University can partner with the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery to bring dinosaurs to the kids and families here in our region” .
Dr. Witmer and his research on dinosaurs have been featured on the Discovery Channel, History Channel, National Geographic Channel and CBS. A new finding by the WitmerLab is also included in this month’s issue of National Geographic Kids.
Dr. Witmer and members of his WitmerLab team will be bringing replica skull casts of a variety of dinosaurs for informal discussions, as well as a presentation at 11:00 a.m. Fifteen OU-HCOM medical students will also be volunteering during Dinosaur Day.
In addition to the live programming, there will be 3-D dinosaur puzzles, photo opportunities with a Quiltzilla, the opportunity to participate in a “dig,” dinosaur crafts and other activities. The museum also offers other interactive stations and activities for toddlers.
The Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery is a non-profit, volunteer-driven community organization with a commitment to creating unique educational and recreational experiences for children and their families in southeastern Ohio. The museum is located in the Market on State (formerly the University Mall) on East State Street. Suggested donations of $2 per person or $5 per family will be accepted.
