Travel Health Consultation

OhioHealth Campus Care works with students traveling abroad for school related study, business, or pleasure to prepare students for a safe, healthy travel experience. A travel consultation allows for reviewing and providing necessary immunizations, prophylactic medications, and educating the student on appropriate health and safety concerns prior to traveling abroad.

Procedure

Students traveling abroad will need to complete the OhioHealth Campus Care Travel Health Assessment Form. Students should submit the completed form along with their official vaccination record to OhioHealth Campus Care, preferably six (6) weeks prior to travel. A six (6) week notice ensures that OhioHealth Campus Care can administer vaccinations in time for them to be effective before travel.

Things to Think About When Traveling

A OhioHealth Campus Care Registered Nurse (RN), with oversight from a physician, will review the Travel Health Assessment Form and vaccination record. The RN will check the country specific information on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website, for travel recommendations unique to the country, city, and/or destination area. The RN will contact the student within three (3) business days of receiving the Travel Health Assessment Form to schedule the student’s appointment.

Students will be given one (1) of the following options:

  1. Vaccines Only:   The RN will discuss with the student via phone any traveling and vaccine recommendations. If immunizations or boosters are recommended the student will be advised to visit the OhioHealth Campus Care Allergy and Immunization Clinic during business hours.
  2. Travel Consultation with an RN:   The RN will contact the student to schedule an appointment. During the appointment the RN will outline all travel recommendations, administer recommended immunizations, and discuss post-travel care.
  3. Travel Consultation with a Provider:   The RN will contact the student to schedule an appointment with a OhioHealth Campus Care provider. Prior the student’s appointment, the RN will outline travel recommendations, administer recommended immunizations, and discuss post-travel care.

Criteria for Provider Consultation

  • Students with severe physical or mental health problems
  • Students that are required or request a medical physical
  • Students who are going to an area where prophylactic medications are recommended
  • Any situation in which the RN assesses that the student’s health or travel plans would benefit from a provider consult
  • Any patient that is not an established patient at OhioHealth Campus Care MUST see a provider

Post Travel Care

The RN will contact the student thirty (30) days after the student returns to the United States to check on their health status, and to remind the student of any post-travel recommendations, such as tuberculosis testing. If the student is having any physical or mental health issues the RN will schedule the student an appointment with a OhioHealth Campus Care Provider.

Travel Consultation and Immunization Costs

Students are responsible for all costs associated with a travel consultation and recommended vaccines. The RN will provide travel vaccine costs to the student. There are additional charges for nurse and provider visits. As a courtesy, at the student’s request, OhioHealth Campus Care will bill the student’s health insurance. It is the student’s responsibility to understand their coverage. A payment plan is available at OhioHealth Campus Care. Please visit the OhioHealth Campus Care Business Office for additional information.
