OhiONE is an interactive compressed videoconferencing network, which uses dedicated connections arranged via State of Ohio Network or the Ohio Middle Mile Consortium with E-Rate and USAC/RSC approved pricing. OhiONE has a variety of enhanced video bridging services, including IP or ISDN video protocols, and data traffic as needed. For increased network flexibility, OhiONE maintains gateways to other networks operated by the State of Ohio and Ohio University. Additionally, OhiONE provides dial-out video connectivity to the public switched network and has effectively linked to other regional, national, and international locations. Questions about system capability or capacity should be directed to the Telehealth Director or Operations Manager.
Tools of the Trade
Videoconferences, distance lectures or learning activities involve limited resources and varying levels of technical support. Users are encouraged to make tentative requests when a project date and time are first proposed to insure video network service availability. Distance learning resources, videoconferencing systems, room availability, and support staff are often reserved weeks or months in advance.
Videoconferencing can be initiated from any OhiONE site to any other site or among multiple locations. Any video device can be attached to the system. When necessary, a regular telephone or mobile device call may be incorporated to provide access for individuals who don't have access to OhiONE.
Advance planning is essential for video meetings and/or learning activities. It takes almost twice the time to prepare a video event as it would to prepare a presentation for an on-site audience. Video distance learning is, by nature, different than lecturing in a traditional classroom. The presenter becomes a producer of a television program requiring a plan, a script and using multimedia tools to engage the audience. Materials prepared for display on a classroom projector may not be suitable for viewing on television. Users are strongly encouraged to submit any visuals to the distance learning staff for review and modification to ensure success.
Call or email tentative requests with any detailed requirements as soon as possible to the Telehealth Staff. Specifics must be provided for basic videoconferences at least 24-hours in advance. Needed information includes:
- what is the name of the event;
- when and where the event is to be held;
- how long it may last;
- which sites are involved;
- will there be shared digital content?
More complex distance learning endeavors regularly require special resources and support coordination no less than 48-hours before an event. Technical support is subject to the following priorities:
- no resource conflict, then on a first-requested, first-served basis;
- current events have priority over future events;
- instructional/professional requests may have priority over administrative requests;
- Heritage College priorities or limitations may occasionally restrict availability.
