Industrial engineers design, implement, and operate systems that integrate people, equipment, materials, and information. They are trained to study systems and processes and make those them as efficient and cost-effective as possible in diverse industries such as transportation, health care, manufacturing, food, entertainment, information technology and distribution. Industrial engineers lead projects, people and organizations, so strong communication and organizational skills are important.

The IMSE department grants an ABET-accredited B.S. in industrial and systems engineering. Graduate students have the opportunity to pursue a Master of Science in industrial and systems engineering or a Ph.D. in integrated engineering.

The undergraduate curriculum is designed for students to gradually develop the specialized skills needed for their chosen field. First-year students study chemistry, calculus, and general education courses, then begin to specialize in the second year by studying statistics, engineering economics, and project management. Junior year, students learn a variety of industrial engineering fundamentals including simulation, quality, production control, and Six Sigma. Senior year offers primarily elective courses in engineering science, business, math, science, and industrial and systems engineering. During senior year, students must also complete courses in a professional concentration area: manufacturing, supply chain management, human factors, health care, information systems, or general industrial engineering.

Career Opportunities

Industrial and systems engineering students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Russ College's Cooperative Education program. More than half of the students in the ISE department have participated. Open to all engineering majors, the program integrates coursework with paid, career-related work experience. Students alternate full-time employment with full-time study, with most students working a total of three to four quarters. Companies may assist students with living arrangements or stipends during their co-ops, and many often extend job offers upon graduation. ISE students have recently worked at Honda of America, General Electric, Kodak, Kenworth, and Cornerstone Consolidated Distribution, and other companies. For more information, visit

The skills industrial and systems engineering students learn are applicable to any system that uses people, equipment, materials, and information. Industrial engineers may analyze and solve day-to-day problems in a factory, warehouse, or hospital. They might also act as project managers, designing a new system and managing its implementation. Most careers involve a mix of these activities, with responsibility for considering both short-term and long-term issues in a facility.

Graduates have gone on to work for Dell Computers, Honda of America, General Electric, Intel, Kenworth, Federal Express, Tyco, UPS, Progressive, Capital One, the U.S. Navy, and Children's Hospital of Columbus.

Because of increasing emphasis on quality and productivity in manufacturing and other industries, demand for industrial engineers is expected to continue to grow. According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, the projected need for industrial engineers over the next ten years exceeds all other branches of engineering. In addition, industrial engineers are generally able to find employment in a variety of positions and are less affected by shifts in the economy because of the breadth of fields open to them.


Special Features

Industrial and systems engineering students can take advantage of a computer-integrated manufacturing laboratory, a manufacturing integration laboratory, a number of customized computer systems, a microprocessor applications and robot laboratory, and a work design laboratory. Professional software available to students includes Arena® simulation software, AutoCAD®, Matlab®, and Minitab®.

In addition, students have opportunities for research through the Center for Advanced Software Systems Integration, where ISE faculty develop software systems and integrate various technologies. Russ College students can also broaden their horizons with more than 15 engineering organizations and honor societies. ISE students participate in a student chapter of the Institute of Industrial   Engineers with activities including visiting industrial facilities, hearing from guest speakers, and planning social events for IMSE students and faculty. Alpha Pi Mu, the Industrial Engineering honor society, invites junior, senior, and graduate students to join each year, based on grade-point average and class standing. ISE students are also involved in college-wide organizations such as Tau Beta Pi, Theta Tau, the Society for Women Engineers, and the National Society for Black Engineers. 

The Russ College also offers an outreach program for multicultural students. The five-week Pre-Engineering Program for Multicultural Students (PEP) assists eligible first-year students with the transition from high school to a Russ College engineering or technology program. ISE faculty have substantial experience in the industry, and others consult on a regular basis with industrial and governmental agencies. All faculty are closely involved with the undergraduate program. Ongoing faculty endeavors include research in manufacturing system design and scheduling, system modeling, human factors, health and safety, supply chain systems, cost modeling, artificial intelligence, and information systems. The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ College of Engineering and Technology educates well-rounded professionals with both technical and team-project skills.
