Ohio University's nine undergraduate colleges offer more than 250 programs of study. Students may select from a wide variety of majors, minors and certificates. While most undergraduate programs at the Athens campus are designed to be completed in four years, a limited number of two-year degree programs are available as well.

Program Overview

Ohio University–Chillicothe, Ohio University–Lancaster, and Ohio University–Southern offer a two-year program of study in business management technology (BMT) leading to the Associate in Applied Business degree. The program offers a balance of theory and practice suitable for students interested in careers in supervision. Courses offered take a management approach to the functional areas of business operations including human resource management, marketing, operations, supervision, planning, and distribution. The principles of continuous quality improvement are used throughout the program. The BMT program includes a concentration requirement that provides students with opportunities for course work that more specifically prepares them for careers in supervision. Concentration areas are determined with a student's advisor and include two 3 credit hour courses in areas such as marketing, quality control, real estate, organizational communication, computer technology, finance, accounting technology, electronic media, among others. Opportunities Upon Graduation

The BMT program is intended to prepare students for supervising or entry level management positions in a number of industry sectors. Students have opportunities to develop analysis skills, problem solving, team building, and business presentations. Industry sectors that can benefit from supervisors who understand and practice these skills include manufacturing, retail, finance and banking, service, distribution, small business, health care, and not-for-profit. Students are also prepared to continue their academic studies in several baccalaureate programs.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the business management technology major, students will be able to:

  • Explain how organizations use Continuous Improvement approaches and tools to improve work systems.
  • Demonstrate software applications for business reports including charts, graphs, and tables.
  • Draft management objectives and an executable plan for use at the department level of organizations (i.e. by supervisors in marketing department, customer service department, etc.).
  • Identify a workplace problem/issue, identify 2 or more potential alternatives to resolving the problem.  
  • Use information and data to evaluate and compare potential solutions/alternatives and using quantitative and qualitative rationale present one viable solution to implement. 
  • Evaluate the benefits and challenges of effective hiring, evaluating, and developing human resources at the supervisor level for organizations.
  • Design Excel spreadsheets that can be used for basic data analysis used in budgeting, forecasting, and supervisory decision making/planning.
  • Design graphs and charts in Excel to be used for the 7 basic Quality Tools (Cause and Effect, Pareto Diagram, Run Chart/Control Chart, Scatter Diagram, Histogram, Flow Chart, and Check Sheet).
  • Complete written communications at the supervisory level (i.e. external letters, internal memos, e-mails, work instructions, performance reports, etc.)
  • Present supervisory level reports/information orally using presentation software.
