Media Arts and Studies Major
The School of Media Arts and Studies prepares well-rounded, proactive individuals to think critically, act creatively, and practice ethically in a global media society. Students have exceptional opportunities to focus in an area of specific interest (i.e., media production, media studies, media management), while also taking advantage of a broad-based curriculum that enhances long-term success. The School also provides several media-related student organizations and we strongly encourage participation in internships. These opportunities lead to important connections that foster career advancement.
With over 650 undergraduates and 20 faculty in the School of Media Arts and Studies, strong demand to join the program dictates that we have entry requirements above the university's requirements. The School of Media Arts and Studies also offers a major through the Honors Tutorial College for students with outstanding high school records.
The classroom and laboratory experiences of students are augmented by a variety of practical experiences, including work with the school's student production unit: Athens Video Works (AVWproductions.com), the All-Campus Radio Network (acrn.com), Brick City Records (brickcityrecords.com), and the three university-owned and -operated public broadcasting stations: WOUB-AM, WOUB-FM, and WOUB-TV (woub.org). Academic redit for such experiences is available.
The School maintains relationships with various professional organizations, including SIGGRAPH, the Ohio Association of Broadcasters, International Game Developers Association, the International Radio-Television Society, the National Association of Television Program Executives, the Audio Engineering Society, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, the National Association of Broadcasters, and the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE).
