Regional City Directories
City Directories from Southeastern Ohio
The southeastern Ohio region is one of the main areas of interest for the collections acquired and housed in the Archives & Special Collections department of the Ohio University Libraries. And one type of publication we seek to collect, a publication that is useful for the documentation and study of the region is the city directory.
City directories are somewhat comparable to telephone directories but contain even more information for the communities they cover. (In a few cases this publication covers an entire county.) They are generally more durable through use of a better grade paper and hardboard covers. They include a list of residents and frequently provide some occupational information on the residents. They also generally include a cross-reference list of residents and businesses, etc. located on each street. They generally have a “yellow pages” section. And they may even contain additional information.
Our collection of published volumes, except for volumes from Athens, is currently uncataloged. The list is arranged alphabetically by town or county and then by year.
Most of our collection of nearly 300 volumes (as of early 2001) has been donated and we are interested in additional donations that will fill in gaps we may have and keep our collection current.
