July 08, 2018 : Ohio University Lancaster Theatre’s “HELLO, DOLLY!” Cast Preparing For Opening

by Brooke Arnold

dollyRehearsals are well underway for Ohio University Lancaster Theatre’s production of Hello, Dolly! With just three weeks until the show opens, the cast and crew are working hard to memorize lines, learn choreography, and put the finishing touches on the set. Bursting with humor, joy, and high-energy, Hello, Dolly! includes such classics as “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”, “Ribbons Down My Back,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “Hello, Dolly!,” “Elegance,” and “It Only Takes a Moment”.

KeeganThe majority of these numbers are high-energy dance numbers, all of which choreographer Keegan Fillinger has been preparing for months. When asked what her favorite part of choregraphing the show was, she said, “I love seeing the choreography I envisioned in my head actually happening on stage with dancers, actors, and singers”. While some of the musical numbers are challenging, the cast is embracing the challenges – and loving it.

wellsPhilip Wells, who plays Horace Vandergelder, is embracing the fun and energy of the rehearsals, and says he loves working with the cast, whom he calls “brilliantly talented”. He also has high praise for Director Victor Jones, saying that he is excited to work “under the direction of a professional”.

malonePatrick Malone, taking on the role of Barnaby Tucker, echoes Philip Wells’ statement about the energy of the show. He says that “working on the exciting and enthusiastic music is so much fun and definitely one of the best parts of rehearsal”. While many of the cast, such as Malone, are familiar with being on stage in lead roles, others are newer to the stage.

kelleylachKelley Lach, who plays the role of Minnie Fay, is taking on her first lead role. She is enjoying the rehearsal process of learning a role, saying that “even though it is intimidating at first, it is a huge step and I could not do it without the support from my cast and family”. With rehearsals four days a week, the cast certainly has time to bond and support each other – something that is essential to the teamwork that is required to perform the show.

russellPaul Russell, who is an ensemble member, says that the teamwork is his favorite part of rehearsals. He says, “It's thrilling to see everyone with such diverse talents, abilities, and backgrounds come together and operate as one unit to create the magic of theater”. The magic of gabiHello, Dolly is sure to thrill Lancaster audiences, and cast member Gabriela Rodriguez, ensemble member/Mrs. Rose, is excited to share that magic with them. “The hard work of rehearsals”, she says, “is paying off! I love when we have an incredible rehearsal and we can see the show start to take shape”. Hello, Dolly! is the perfect show for the entire family and the cast and crew encourages everyone to come and see the high-energy show that bursts with joy from the opening notes of the overture to the end.
