October 16, 2014 : Workshops Help Undecided Students Select a Major
- Cheri Russo
Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – There are a large number of students at Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington who have trouble answering the question “What’s your major?”  That’s because those students are undecided, meaning they have not declared a major yet.  Data shows that students who have a clear goal are more focused, stay motivated to go to class and earn the best possible grades.  That’s why Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington advisors are holding workshops on how to pick a major.

“We want students to learn about how to make an informed decision on their major,” said Advisor Kim Jeffers. “There are more than 270 majors to pick from at Ohio University and that can be overwhelming for someone who is unsure of what direction they want to go in.  This workshop can help them start to figure things out.”

The workshops are being held in both Lancaster and Pickerington so students can come to the location that works best for them.

“We will talk about the majors that are available, the types of interest that go with specific majors and the kinds of jobs that students can get with particular degrees,” said Jeffers.  “We want to get students thinking, so they can start heading down the path of declaring a major.”

Eighty percent of students entering college admit that they’re not certain what they want to study. Some students declare a major and change their minds later.  Fifty percent of college students change their majors at least once.

The next workshops will be held on the Lancaster Campus on Wednesday, October 29 at 9:30 a.m.in Brasee Hall Room 445, which is the upper level of the library, and Thursday October 30 at 12:30 p.m. at the Pickerington Center.
