Dirk Crist
April 15, 2014 : Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington Graduation Spotlight: Dirk Crist
- Cheri Russo
Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – Dirk Crist is graduating from Ohio University Lancaster this May, but he’s already got a job working in the real world – using the knowledge he gained while on campus.  The 24-year-old from Sugar Grove has been working part-time in the Fairfield Union School District as a technology support technician.
“OUL Associate Professor of Computer Science Technology Da Zhang notified me of the job posting via e-mail, and I applied,” said Crist. “I repair stations, maintain classroom technologies, and assist teachers and students with technology if they have questions.”
“We have made an effort to provide our students opportunities with internships or part-time jobs,” said Zhang. “We hope our students, through internships or part-time jobs, acquire sufficient skills for full-time jobs after they graduate.”
Crist came to OUL after graduating from Berne Union High School. He spent one year on the regional campus and then relocated to Athens to pursue a degree in digital media. But after three years in Athens and completing his bachelor’s degree, Crist realized he wanted to pursue a career in information technology. So he came back to OUL to earn the Computer Networking Specialist Certificate.
“Someday I would like to start my own networking company,” said Crist. “I want to establish and manage networks for small businesses.”
Crist said his time on the Lancaster Campus has been wonderful and he appreciates the opportunities he’s had to practice what he learned in the classroom.
“I love that the classes are smaller.  You can get a chance to know people in class as opposed to a bigger campus,” said Crist. “And you can take advantage of opportunities to work in your field.”
Crist also works as a library assistant during his time at OUL. He is currently interviewing for full-time positions in the information technology field and feels his part-time job has made him better prepared. He looks forward to being able to pursue his career and is ready for whatever the future holds.
