July 01, 2015 : Summer Open Gyms Keep OUL Athletes on Their Game
- Cheri Russo

Lancaster – In the summer, many students take time off to rest and relax.  However, students on Ohio University Lancaster’s athletic teams are spending the summer in the gym practicing for next season.
“We have open gym for volleyball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball over the summer,” said OUL Athletic Director Jeff Whitehead. “It keeps players and coaches in touch over the summer and gives incoming freshman a chance to become part of the team.”
The open gym sessions are typically held in the evening.  The summer is a time when most students aren’t in class, and they have the extra time to really practice their sport.
“Coaches have the chance to talk to their players about the upcoming semester, and the classes they are planning to take,” said Whitehead. “It helps the coaches and students build a practice schedule that works for everyone.”
The Ohio University Lancaster Campus supports several athletic teams including men's and women's basketball, women's volleyball, men's baseball, men's and women's tennis, golf, and women's softball. The campus is a member of the Ohio Regional Campus Conference and participates in all Conference and State Championships. Participation is open to all students who are enrolled in at least seven hours for credit and who meet academic eligibility criteria.
Last school year, the men’s baseball teams won the ORCC East Division and placed 2nd in the state tournament; the women’s basketball team on the ORCC East Division and were state champions; the men’s basketball team was the ORCC East champions; the volleyball team won the ORCC East Division; and the tennis team won the ORCC East Division.
“OUL athletics had an amazing year last year,” said Whitehead. “We hope to continue that this year with the many great players we have returning and a great freshman class.”
