by Sarah Shy

Over two hundred students grade 4th through 9th participated in a variety of subject areas through the Kids in College program at Ohio University Lancaster. 2018 was the 39th year for Kids in College and ran through the month of June.

kidswriting“This year was a success. There were two hundred thirty-three students. The classes that we offered were sciences, writing, mathematics, recreational, and art classes. Students had a great time learning new things.” said Maryann Lape, Administrative Coordinator.

Just like typical students enrolled at the Lancaster campus, Kids in College participants are taught by qualified instructors and given individualized attention. The program is designed to bring the highest quality and best experience while encouraging them to tackle new challenges and topics.

KidsincollegeMary Danahey is one of the instructors for Kids in College and part of the English faculty at Lancaster campus. This year she taught creative writing. When on a short visit to her class, the kids were all very enthusiastic to get started and engaged in the subject matter. Each individual student had an outstanding amount of imagination and brought their ideas to their story projects.

“In creative writing, my young students were eager to create and explore their short story ideas from detectives to mermaid princesses as well as to enjoy the fun of designing nonsense limericks and sharing their completed books. This summer was definitely a success, and we were all sad to see the last day.” Said Danahey.

Not only did participants learn subjects that supplemented what they learn in school, but they also got to experience life in a university and interact with staff and faculty. The experience at Kids in College can ease fears for students about college life and inspire them to pursue higher education after high-school graduation.
