September 03, 2015 : Some Improvements to Wagner Theatre for John Fullbright Show
- Cheri Russo
Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – Those who attend the next Covered Bridge Music Series show at Ohio University Lancaster may notice a few changes in the Wagner Theatre. The Wagner Theatre renovation project is underway. The walls have been painted and most of the improvements have been made to the sound system.

“We still have a lot more work to do,” said OUL Dean Dr. Jim Smith.  “However, I think those who have attended past shows in the theatre will notice the improvements to the room’s sound system, and it will improve their experience.  Unfortunately, we need to work around the many groups, events and plays that use the theatre so the changes will occur over time. That will mean the full effect of improved sound, lighting, paint, curtain and stage will take time. We are also still in need of more donations to have the full amount needed to extend the stage forward to make it easier to have events in front of the curtain like CBMS while we have a set for play behind the curtain.”

The Wagner Theatre was built in the 1960’s and much of the equipment no longer meets industry standards or supports the many function that we use the theatre for today.  A fundraising campaign to generate the money to update the space has made great progress and community support but has a way to go to reach its goal. With the improved facilities, the theatre program will have better equipment to enhance productions as well as be equipped to host more visiting artists and performers and to serve as a venue for lectures by nationally-known speakers.

Grammy-Nominated Singer/Songwriter John Fullbright will perform in the 475-seat Wagner Theatre on Saturday, September 12 as part of the Covered Bridge Music Series. A plainspoken approach is part of what’s fueled the young Oklahoman’s remarkable rise. It was just a few years ago that Fullbright released his debut studio album, ‘From The Ground Up’ to a swarm of critical acclaim.

“John Fullbright is a tremendous young songwriting talent,” said Covered Bridge Music Series Committee Chair Steve Wells.  “Several on our committee have witnessed his dynamic live performances in the past. It should be a fantastic evening.”
Tickets for the show are available at www.ohio.edu/lancaster/events/coveredbridgemusicseries.cfm

The Covered Bridge Music Series is a joint venture between Ohio University Lancaster Campus and The Lancaster Festival.  The purpose of the partnership is to showcase fresh and relevant musical talent providing discovery and enjoyment for the campus and Fairfield County communities and the region.

The partnership started in the fall of 2012. Five concerts have been performed on campus. The most recent show, which was held in May, 2015, featured Singer/Songwriter Ray Wylie Hubbard with Houston, Texas, native John Evans opening the concert.  The concert was held outdoors near the John Bright Number 2 Covered Bridge, located on the OUL campus.

The Covered Bridge Music Series concerts generally take place twice a year (spring and fall) on the Lancaster Campus of Ohio University.
