Lancaster – The poster advertising the Phi Theta Kappa Adopt-a-Family Drive this year used a quote from The Prayer of Saint Francis - "For it is in giving that we receive." PTK students say that quote sums up why the annual drive is so successful on the Ohio University Lancaster Campus.
"Look at all these presents," said PTK President Candace Burns right before the group started wrapping the gifts. "We got a great response."
Collection boxes were set up around campus to collect gifts for a family of three. Burns said PTK is pleased they are able to give the mother, her seven-year-old son and five-year-old daughter, a nice Christmas.
"There's just something about being able to help a family, a family that is part of our community, at Christmas time," said Burns. "We all just remember what kind of Christmases we had as children, and we want to be able to give that to a family in need."
"For me, it feels like it grows every year," said PTK's Ariel Bobbitt. "It's really fantastic."
Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor society on campus. The group has also organized an Easter egg hunt for Big Brothers Big Sisters for the last several years. Last year, the group put together "Recyclemania" on campus. The event is a friendly waste reduction competition among college campuses.
PTK members wrapped the presents for the family last Wednesday afternoon.
