Ohio University Lancaster has added a new lactation room available to all parent students, faculty, staff and visitors.

“The new lactation room at Ohio University Lancaster signifies the university’s commitment to being student-centered, as well as providing these same services to faculty and staff who may have a need.  Our students face so many challenges – and many are busy with work, raising families, and being in college.  The lactation room ensures a private and accessible space for nursing mothers who need to pump,” said Pamela A. Kaylor, Ph.D., Communication Studies/Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies for Ohio University Lancaster.

The lactation room on the Lancaster Campus is located in Brasee Hall 316A. This lactation room includes a glider and ottoman, a white noise cancellation machine, a round table, a full-length mirror, and a table lamp. A sink and microwave are available nearby in room 312.

“Ohio University Lancaster wants to increase access for all students,” said Joshua Moore, Enrollment Manager for Ohio University Lancaster. “We feel that those who are in need of this service now have it available to them, while not interrupting their class and study schedules. If you have any questions, or would like to utilize this room, please stop by student services.”

This room also has a Medela Symphony Plus Pump for your use. In order to use this hospital-grade, multi-user pump, you will need to bring your own attachments, which can be purchased on Amazon or through Medela's suppliers. This video explains the various functions of the Medela Symphony Plus, and is recommended viewing before using the pump for your first time.

Dr. M. Geneva Murray, director of the Ohio University Women’s Center said this about the pump. “The pumps make it easier for those lactating to produce milk and allow them to not carry a breast pump around campus.”

The lactation rooms are available during Brasee Hall’s open hours. For more information, contact the Women’s Center at 740-593-9625. If you need assistance in ensuring that you have access to a lactation room, you should contact your Human Resources representative if you are an OHIO University employee (including student employees), or University Equity and Civil Rights Compliance (ECRC) if you are a student.
