May 22, 2018 : Refugee and Immigrant Session Separates Fact from Fiction

by Sarah Shy

Ohio University Lancaster’s Diversity Committee and Student Social Work Association co-hosted a refugee and immigrant training session from the non-profit organization: Community Refugee and Immigration Services.

refugee“This was a great opportunity for our students to learn pertinent information about refugees and immigrants. Many of our students have not been exposed to new learning about this population,” said Dr. Lisa Skeens, Assistant Professor, Social Work, Ohio University Lancaster.

Tyler Reeve (pictured) presented on the history and policies of refugees and immigrants in the United States, along with the current trends in Central Ohio. Participants learned about the history, policies, and services for both refugees and immigrants. The presentation included debunking myths and clarifying facts on subjects pertaining to refugees and immigrants in the United States and in Ohio.

The session was open to the public with many people in attendance. “We were thrilled to have a full house for the event!” said Skeens.
