April 17, 2018 : Guitar Club (STRUM) will present spring end of semester concert

strum concertOhio University-Lancaster’s Guitar Club (STRUM) will present a spring concert on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, from 2:10-3:00 p.m. in the Bobcat Bistro.  The concert is free and open to OU-L faculty, students, friends, family and the general public.

Participating students are enrolled in OU-L’s folk guitar class or continuing members of the STRUM Club (Students Teaching Rookie Undergraduate Musicians), the only guitar ensemble of its kind on any of the OU regional campuses. This semester’s nine-member ensemble is directed by Dr. Paul Young, adjunct professor of music at Ohio University-Lancaster. STRUM Club was formed during the 2013-2014 academic year to enable students who were interested in the guitar, but had never played, to have an opportunity to learn and share experiences with those with varied backgrounds and familiarity with the instrument. Student interest remains high and the musical relationships that have been formed continue to enrich the culture of the campus.

According to Dr. Paul Young, the program director and faculty advisor to the STRUM Club, “Each semester brings a new group of students of varying experience and ability. Many of the students did not know how to play basic chords or read music in January. The fact that in three months they have learned basic chording and strumming patterns, some elements of music theory, and sightreading skills is testimony of their hard work and commitment to learning to play the guitar. That they are willing to perform a public concert demonstrates their increasing confidence and musicianship.

This semester’s program features a variety of specially arranged music for the guitar ensemble, including works from classic folk tunes, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country/Western, Pop, Broadway, and several major hits from the Beatles, including Hey Jude, marking the 50th anniversary of its release.
