Lancaster – When Benjy Uhl started college nearly 20 years ago at Ohio University Lancaster, he knew he wanted to go into business or marketing. Now, as executive vice president at NFocus in Lancaster, Uhl has put his knowledge of both of those fields to use by helping build an international data company from the ground up.
“Attending Ohio University Lancaster was a good option for me. During my first two years of school, I worked locally. I transferred to Athens for my junior year. Then, my senior year, I started working at NFocus,” said Uhl. “So, I took classes in Lancaster and Athens. I was the third employee hired at NFocus. I learned something in marketing class in school and applied it the next day at work. I was able to help build this company and it was great. I took the classes I needed that were offered at OUL and took the classes that I couldn’t get in Lancaster by commuting to Athens. It was the way I was able to complete my degree.”
NFocus is a data agency that works with companies in the United States and abroad on marketing intelligence and technology. The company now employs about 40 people. NFocus hosts data about virtually every household in the United States with hundreds of demographic selections to help companies understand and communicate with their customers.
“I had other job offers,” said Uhl. “But, I liked the fact that I could build something. I could help create this place and that appealed to me.”
Uhl also uses his marketing knowledge and expertise in the community. He is the vice president of the Lancaster Festival Board. The Lancaster Festival is a 10 day event held each July in Lancaster promoting arts and culture. Uhl is also the chair of the Lancaster Festival marketing committee. He is a former member of the Lancaster Bingo, Inc. Board of Directors. Lancaster Bingo is a charitable gaming company and the largest distributor in the U.S. of pull-tab games.
Uhl and NFocus also work with Ohio University Lancaster’s B.S. in Applied Management program. NFocus works with Program Director Brian Hoyt to give students real-world projects to complete for the company. A beneficial effect for students in these project-based learning experiences is that some are hired by the companies they are working with, as has been the case with NFocus.
“We hire OUL Applied Management bachelor’s degree graduates because of the skill sets these students graduate with and our focus on the Lancaster community,” said Uhl. “It’s a great relationship we have with OUL.”
Uhl said NFocus is continuing to expand and grow. They are now in the process of hiring new employees. As the third employee in the company, he values his preparation at OUL and enjoys seeing the growth and change at NFocus.
