August 24, 2018 : Partnering with the Community Helps the Campus Succeed

by Sarah Shy

Ohio University’s Lancaster Campus and Pickerington Center has been a key partner for countless groups and organizations throughout Central Ohio by providing meeting space and facilities for events and group activities. In many situations, groups cannot find appropriate space for their needs.

Bloom from the Darkness is one of the many groups that use the facilities for their meetings. The group is a non-profit organization and has been meeting at the Lancaster campus since June 2018. The focus of the group is on mental health awareness and wellness, and suicide prevention. The group aims to bring free activities and events to the community in hopes that it will bring people together for some fun, while at the same time helping them navigate their mental health in a happy and comfortable environment.

Shannon Scott is the founder of the group and works along with her daughter Kylie. She said in the beginning of the group, they had nowhere to go and reached out to the Lancaster campus.

“Using the space and facilities has helped greatly. You (Ohio University Lancaster) gave us a safe and friendly environment for people to meet. We have several youths that come to the meetings and they have been able to see “college life” to some extent, as well as be witness to the theater practices, which really brought a lot of joy to one of our autistic young ladies. We feel very safe and comfortable meeting here.” Scott said.

Scott also mentioned that one of the biggest highlights of the group was watching the excitement of the young autistic woman when she got to see the theater performers dress up and hear them sing and perform. Scott said the moment was something very special for her.

Not only has the university been able to help them find an appropriate area for their meetings, but they have been able to use the university grounds for group events. Scott said that making arrangements to use the facilities here was extremely easy to do and the university has been very supportive of the group and what it is accomplishing.

“It was a breath of fresh air to have such easy access to a well-known University when we were looking for a safe and comfortable environment for our peers. I would definitely recommend Ohio University Lancaster to anyone that is looking for a positive and supportive staff to work with, accompanied by a clean and safe environment.” Scott said.
