December 02, 2014 : Music Festival Internship Exciting Opportunity for OUL Student
- Cheri Russo
Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – An Ohio University Lancaster student is now positive that she chose the right major and career after a special summer internship.  Senior Monica Sherry, a Communication Studies major, interned with AC Entertainment in Knoxville, Tennessee, and helped put on the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival.

“It was 24 hours of music.  It’s outside and people camp,” said Sherry. “It’s a big deal. They had an attendance of about 85,000 people this year.”

The festival is held each June in Manchester, Tennessee. The four-day festival features about 200 performers, musicians and comedians on 10 different stages. Headliners at last summer’s event included Kanye West and Elton John. Sherry, a resident of Canal Winchester, helped manage the roughly 2500 volunteers who worked at the festival.

“I would drive volunteers around the site, drop them off at their work location, and get them signed in,” said Sherry. “I was there working for 10 days.  It was a lot of work, but it was great!”

Sherry graduates at the end of this semester.  The 25-year old has been going to college on and off since 2007.  She had a hard time selecting the right major. During Bonnaroo, Sherry was able to see how what she learned in the classroom applied to the real world.

“I just got done taking the Meeting and Conference Planning class, right before this internship.  At the end of each day at Bonnaroo, we’d have wrap-up meetings,” said Sherry. “Seeing the way our supervisor would run our meetings, it was just like what was said in class. It was very funny, watching it after just having that class. I was able to realize what he was doing and why.”

Sherry also learned during her internship that music event planning and management is the right fit for her.

“The internship solidified that I made the right decision for my major. This is definitely what I want to do. I had so much fun,” said Sherry.
