May 17, 2019 : Aspiring Education Students Making a Difference in Ohio

by Kellie Crawford

OSEAconferenceThe Ohio Student Education Association at Ohio University Lancaster has two officers that served on the state board from 2018-2019, Kauthar Guled (Minority Member At-large) and Kellie Crawford (Chair). Their work focused on giving aspiring educators a stronger voice in the state of Ohio and the national level. When asked about her thoughts about OSEA, Kauthar Guled shared that “OSEA has given me such amazing opportunities for networking with educators and education majors from different states. I’m grateful that I was given the chance to be on the OSEA board and attend many conferences!”

Recently, the OSEA Ohio University Lancaster chapter attended the state OSEA Teaching Matters Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The chapter was able to network with different aspiring education majors from across Ohio and learn more about the education world. Members attended different sessions that are relevant to the different aspects of aspiring to become an educator like preparing for state licensure exams or how to implement trauma-informed practices in the classroom. Members also had the opportunity to listen to a keynote from the Ohio Teacher of the Year, who was a finalist for the National Teacher of the Year award. Leah Phillips, a sophomore Middle Childhood Education major at Ohio University-Lancaster, was a first time attendee for the conference. She shared that the conference provided her with the opportunity to “meet many amazing people who have the same goal as I do for education. They encouraged me to do more for my future as an educator. There can be difficult and confusing times for college students but with a great support from colleagues, we can better ourselves and learn together through our experiences.

Dr. Dunning received the Advisor of the Year award for her outstanding work to help the chapter grow and flourish. Coupled with this, OSEA Ohio University Lancaster won the Outstanding Local Event award for the toy drive they participated in with other Ohio University Lancaster organizations this past holiday season, helping the foster children of Fairfield county have a merrier Christmas. Elections were also held for the new state board members. Leah Phillips was elected as Chair-Elect for the state, a two-year position. In her second year of service, she will serve as Chair of the state.
