Ohio University-Lancaster’s Guitar Club (STRUM) will present a spring concert on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, from 2:15-3:00 p.m. in the Raymond S. Wilkes Gallery for the Visual Arts, Brasee Hall.  The concert is free and open to the public.

“Each semester brings a new group of students of varying experience and ability,” said Dr. Paul Young, the program director and faculty advisor to the STRUM Club. “Some students did not know how to play basic chords or read music in January so the fact that in three months they have learned basic chording and strumming patterns, elements of music theory and sight reading skills is testimony of their hard work and commitment to learning to play the guitar.”

The STRUM Club (Students Teaching Rookie Undergraduate Musicians) is the only guitar ensemble of its kind on any of the Ohio University’s regional campuses. Participating students are enrolled in Ohio University Lancaster’s folk guitar class or are continuing members of the club. This semester’s fifteen-member ensemble is directed by Young, adjunct professor of music at Ohio University-Lancaster.

The STRUM Club was formed during the 2013-2014 academic year to enable students who were interested in the guitar, but had never played, to have an opportunity to learn and share experiences with those with varied backgrounds and familiarity with the instrument. Student interest remains high and the musical relationships that have been formed continue to enrich the culture of the campus.

This semester’s program features a variety of specially arranged music for the guitar ensemble, including works from the Renaissance, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Country/Western, Disco, Pop, and Broadway.
