August 06, 2019 : Content and services available through the library in time for incoming student rush

by Sarah Shy

stacksThe Hannah V. MaCaulay Library at Ohio University Lancaster continues to improve its services. Now with OhioLINK’s collaboration with OPLIN (Ohio Public Library Information Network), INFOhio (Ohio’s Pre-K-12 Digital Library), and the State Library of Ohio, there is an even greater number of resources for patrons. This is great news for students and faculty looking to use the library databases for class material. It’s also a great tool for research into personal interests.

Here is a list of the latest additions to the library:

Hobbies & Crafts Reference Center: This database offers detailed "how-to" instructions and creative ideas to meet the interests of virtually every hobby enthusiast. Full text for nearly 2,000 magazines and book is provided, along with videos, and hobby profiles. Subjects include arts & crafts, home & garden, outdoor recreation, performing arts, and science & technology.

Home Improvement Reference Center: Through a collection of comprehensive full-text content, this database provides users with detailed, user-friendly “how-to” information covering a variety of home improvement and repair projects. Subjects include maintenance, remodeling, electrical work, decorating, plumbing, and wood projects.

Small Business Reference Center: Small Business Reference Center offers exclusive full text for many top consumer small business reference books, as well as tools to address many small business topics. It includes business videos, a help and advice section and details on how to create business plans. Also included are state-specific resources, start-up business plans, and industry information.

Very Short Introductions: From Climate to Consciousness, Game Theory to Ancient Warfare, Privacy to Islamic History, Globalization to Literary Theory, Very Short Introductions online brings together titles from this well-known and established print series, via a highly discoverable and fully cross-searchable platform.

“This is the one I’m most excited about; the content is authoritative and accessible. This is a resource our students will find very useful in a wide variety of subjects. Oxford University Press created this as a print series and it has now been expanded into an online resource perfect for understanding many topics.” Said library director Judy Carey Nevin.

Oxford Research Encyclopedias: With today’s overabundance of information, and misinformation, students and researchers alike can be overwhelmed in identifying what’s trustworthy, what’s up-to-date, and what’s accurate. Oxford University Press has invested in the Oxford Research Encyclopedias to meet this challenge. Working with international communities of scholars across all fields of study, we are developing new comprehensive collections of in-depth, peer-reviewed summaries on an ever-growing range of topics.

Transparent Language Online: A language learning resource, offering speaking, typing, listening, and vocabulary practice in 100+ languages, including for ESL students. Transparent Languages can be used via computer, smart phone, or tablet; both iPhone and Android devices are supported.

Chilton Library: The Chilton Library is a database of automotive help. It includes step-by-step service and repair procedures, wiring diagrams, maintenance and specification tables, troubleshooting guides, and diagnostic trouble codes.

Kids Infobits: Kids Infobits is a kid-friendly database for elementary students that includes books, magazines, news, videos, and images on topics like: animals, arts, geography, health, literature, people, social studies, and technology.

OhioLINK is intertwined within a larger group known as Libraries Connect Ohio. Children K-12 are a part of the group’s audience which also includes college students. Many of the additional resources are great for inspiring a new hobby or giving help to someone’s new project or craft.  Remember, this isn’t the only content available. Much of the other resources offered through the library can help students with their academic research. However, with these new additions, there is something useful for everyone.
