December 01, 2014 : Ohio University Lancaster Guitar Club to Perform Holiday Concert
- Cheri Russo
Communications and Marketing Manager

Lancaster – Ohio University Lancaster’s Guitar Club (STRUM) will present a holiday concert on Wednesday, December 3, 2014, from 2:15-3:00 p.m. in the Raymond S. Wilkes Gallery for the Visual Arts.  The concert is free and open to OUL faculty, students, friends, family and the general public.

Participating OUL students are taking a folk guitar class or continuing members of the OUL STRUM Club (Students Teaching Rookie Undergraduate Musicians), the only guitar ensemble of its kind on any of the Ohio University regional campuses. This semester’s twelve-member ensemble is directed by Dr. Paul Young, adjunct professor of music at Ohio University Lancaster. STRUM Club was piloted during the 2013-2014 academic year to enable students who were interested in the guitar, but had never played, to have an opportunity to learn and share experiences with those with varied backgrounds and familiarity with the instrument. Student interest remains high and the musical relationships that have been formed continue to enrich the culture of the campus.

According to Dr. Paul Young, the program director and faculty advisor to the STRUM Club, “When the semester began in late August, many of the students did not know how to play basic chords or read music of any kind. The fact that in three months they have learned basic chording and strumming patterns, some elements of music theory, and sight reading skills is testimony of their hard work and commitment to learning to play the guitar. That they are willing to perform a public concert demonstrates their increasing confidence and musicianship. Teaching this class and witnessing students’ growth of musical knowledge is a regular a highlight of my week.”

The program features a variety of historical holiday music, including carols from around the world arranged specifically for this unique performance ensemble, arrangements of classic rock songs, and much more.
