December 10, 2018 : Counseling services available at Ohio University Lancaster for students in need

A licensed social worker is available on campus two days a week for students who may be experiencing difficulties with stress, family, school, or other mental health issues.  The focus of the service is brief individual counseling with students, mental health consultation, and education. These services are confidential and free to students.

Kelsi Amerine ( will be available on campus Monday from 2:00PM-6:00PM and Thursday from 11:00AM-3:00PM.

“My main role is to provide brief, solution-focused therapy to students. These services can help target areas from general life or academic stress, to the managing of a chronic mental illness or substance use issues. After their third covered session, if the student and I feel that more on-going treatment would be beneficial, then a referral for these types of services is available,” Amerine said.

Students may schedule an appointment through the Student Services Office or drop in and speak with the social worker, based on availability while on campus only. If more extensive services are needed, the social worker will help the student to locate community resources, including New Horizons Youth & Family Center, which provides a limited number of sessions free of charge to Ohio University Lancaster students who are referred.

Amerine want students to feel comfortable seeking out her services. “I believe there is still a taboo around mental health and mental illness, so I work hard to destigmatize, educate, and raise awareness about these two very real topics.” Amerine said.
