April 01, 2014 : AUDIO: Registration for Kids in College Underway at Ohio University Lancaster

Lancaster – Nine new classes are being offered for the 35th year of Kids in College at Ohio University Lancaster. Registration is now underway. The program will run the weeks of June 16, June 23 and July 7.
Kids in College is a program that provides students entering the 4th through 9th grades the Kids in College logoopportunity to get hands-on experience over the summer that reinforces the knowledge and instruction they received in school.  It also introduces highly motivated students to a college campus and gives students the chance to interact with university professors. Class enrollment is limited so that students can receive individual attention.
“The science classes are really popular. We’ve added a couple more of those this year,” said Maryann Lape, Kids in College coordinator. “We also are offering two cooking classes this year.”
Last year, archery was added to the Kids in College line up and that class is back again this year.
“Archery was a big hit last year,” said Lape. “The children really seemed to enjoy getting the hands-on experience with a bow and arrow.”

The classes are held in two separate sessions.  There is a morning session from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and an afternoon session from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.  There is a supervised lunch period from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students can attend just one or two weeks of classes or they can attend all three weeks.
“I think Kids in College enriches what students already learned in school. It also allows them to pick up arts and things that they might not get in school,” said Lape. “Some students who came to Kids in College later enroll at Ohio University Lancaster | Pickerington as college students.  Kids in College helps to take the fear out of going on to a college campus.”
Last year, Kids in College set a record for attendance. 243 students registered for classes during its three week run.
Registration may be completed by mail or in person at the Ohio University Lancaster Campus, Community and Corporate Learning Office, 1570 Granville Pike, Lancaster, OH 43130.  Office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Except 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.) Monday through Friday.
