Lancaster – Education students are learning the ropes from two Pickerington Local School District teachers. The 2nd grade teachers spoke to the Ohio Student Education Association Tuesday about the new teacher evaluation system and what it means to future educators.
The evaluation system changes the review process for Ohio teachers. The evaluation system will span the entire school year and will go into effect next academic year.
"You are evaluated for the entire school year now," said Teacher Sarah Miller.
"Organization is going to be one of the most important things," said Teacher Kelly Dishong. "The evaluation system is changing the way we teach."
"It's not whole group instruction anymore," said Miller. "Individualized instruction is a huge part of it."
Students in OSEA asked questions of the teachers and picked their brains about what the evaluation process means for students in the classroom. Both teachers thought the students were benefiting from the learning objectives that are part of the evaluation system.
"If you're not an organized thinker, you are going to be frustrated," said OSEA Advisor Terri Green.
The purpose of OSEA is to support teacher education programs by promoting interest in public education and in those wishing to engage in a career in public education. The group meets monthly and is looking to grow its membership.
If you are an education major and have questions about the group, email President Sarah Milam at firstname.lastname@example.org. The group will meet one more time this academic year. The meeting will be held in April.
