    No Place Like Home
By Mary Alice Casey & Sean Hughes

There's no place like home, is there? And face it, there's simply no place like Athens in the fall. The hills are alive with color. The air is getting crisp. The College Green is bustling. What better way to spend an October day than to come home to Athens and Ohio University for Homecoming 2002. "Coming Home," this fall's Homecoming celebration, is your perfect excuse for a getaway this weekend.

There's plenty of tradition and some new things to return for, too: the annual parade through uptown Athens (with a new jog through campus), the elegant awards gala and a Saturday afternoon celebration featuring football and festivities (including an open house at Konneker Alumni Center and the Festival by the Green along Park Place).

  • The big weekend opener will be the Alumni Awards Gala at 8 p.m. on Friday at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. This black tie event celebrates the service and accomplishments of alumni and the special contributions of non-alumni. A complimentary dessert buffet immediately will follow the program.

The excitement continues on Saturday beginning with the Alumni Gathering Place open house at the Konneker Alumni Center from 9 to 11 a.m. Stop by and say, "Hi!" to your Alumni Association friends and get a free penant to wave at the game.

Konneker also makes the perfect viewing place for the annual Homecoming Parade and Float Competition. Grab a spot and watch the creative floats and entertainment as the parade winds its way from East State Street south on Court Street, east on Union, south on University Terrace and west on South Green Drive to Peden Stadium.

The Parade is followed by the first annual Festival by the Green at 11 a.m. Join us for food, music, crafts and a chance to win an official Ohio University Seiko watch and various other exciting prizes. This is an excellent opportunity to taste some of Athens' finest cooking and shop the handmade goods of local craftspeople. Make sure you bring enough money to purchase Ohio University wear for the game!

After the festival take the short jaunt down to Peden Stadium to see the Bobcats battle Eastern Michigan at 2 p.m. Don't forget to wear the Ohio University gear that you purchased at the Festival to support your team!

The fun doesn't stop with the game! Stick around in Athens for the University Program Council's Comedy for The Masses at 8 p.m. on Saturday, the Ohio Field Hockey vs. Northwester game at Pruitt Field at noon on Sunday or the Ohio Soccer vs. Kent State game at Chessa Field at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Don't forget about the many other reunions such as the Alumni Cheerleaders Reunion or the Alumni Band's 35th Reunion that will be taking place throughout the weekend. Visit the homecoming schedule for a detailed look at the weekend.

So come home to experience the tried, the true - and the new. Your old friends will be waiting and new friends will be made.
