Honors Tutorial College

Alumni Spotlight: Kat Primeau

'08 HTC theater alumna Kat Primeau returns to Athens with her new band, Sumeau

When Kat Primeau and Chris Sousa decided to take their band, Sumeau, on a “World Tour of America,” they knew they would have to play their studio-recorded tracks live. So Primeau set out to learn guitar.

“It was really humbling,” she said. “Guitar is a different beast and generally requires many hundreds of hours of training.”

But when the duo made its debut Athens appearance at Casa Nueva Restaurant on September 7, the general consensus was that Sumeau had succeeded in creating an excellent live performance.

For some, recording a song before learning how to play the instruments might seem a bit backward. For Primeau, a 2008 graduate of the Honors Tutorial College theater performance program, it appears to be simply a product of her personality.

“Self-producing in general was something I engaged with in college that has been so useful in the real world,” she said. “If you want to go do something you have to go make it happen for yourself.”

That attitude led Primeau to some interesting opportunities during her time in the College and in the years since. In May 2008, she traveled on a cultural envoy to Prague to present “Hallucinogenic Toreador: a DaDa Exploration” at the Prague Fringe Festival. The show, which she produced, was selected as one of the “Top 5 Picks of the Fringe” out of more than 25 international performances.

Outside of her work with Sumeau, Primeau works regularly with "Robot Teammate and the Accidental Party," a comedy improv group. She has studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and now lives in Los Angeles.

Her variety of interests made HTC an appealing option because it allowed her to combine theater performance with classes like belly dancing, media criticism and women in leadership. Outside of class, her involvement was no less varied: Primeau performed in music videos, wrote for the InterActivist, worked with Fridays Live and acted in the Ohio University soap opera Maybe By Then.
“I just did everything I could do,” she said. “I’m really glad that I could do that because Ohio University and Athens are just flush with fascinating people.”
