Preparing to Interview
Congratulations on being selected to interview with the Honors Tutorial College! Every student who reaches this stage of the HTC tutorial degree programs admission process is exceptionally bright, talented, and hard working. Take a moment to breathe and congratulate yourself on this recognition of your efforts!
It’s important to realize that admission to an HTC tutorial program—or any selective program—is not a reflection of your worth. Admission decisions often factor in things beyond your control, like capacity in a program to ensure quality of instruction or the need for a diversity of academic interests within the major.
Please thoroughly review the information on this website so that you can enter your interview feeling prepared.
Tutorials and Curriculum
The tutorial is the defining feature of the HTC experience and allows you access to an honors education that just doesn't exist anywhere else in the United States at a university of our size (truly! check out the Wikipedia page for tutorial system if you don't believe us!). Dean Donal Skinner has more to share:
Directors of Studies
Your interview will most likely be conducted by your program's director of studies. What is a director of studies? Dean Skinner is ready to tell you more about the important role these esteemed faculty members play in your education.
Scholarships and Funding
Admission to the Honors Tutorial College typically comes with the OHIO Premier Award, valued at full, in-state tuition. Additionally, out-of-state students subject to the non-resident surcharge are eligible for the OHIO Trustee Award, valued at $7,000 annually. Please note that the award associated with your admission to an honors tutorial program is not stackable with every other OHIO scholarship and may replace some on a revised award letter that will be sent to you post-admission.
HTC Outside the Classroom
At Ohio University, we know your college education extends far beyond the classroom or walls of your faculty tutor’s office.
Academically, the college offers paid research apprenticeships that allow you to work on research and creative projects with top faculty who've competed for the honor of hosting a research apprentice. Our students also have support in applying for nationally competitive awards or pursuing global opportunities.
As you probably realize, honors students tend to quickly become overachievers at everything—including stressing themselves out. The college has put in place special resources above and beyond what is available to every OHIO Bobcat. HTC students have access to free tutoring for every course in which they're enrolled. We also provide free mental health counseling through the Psychology and Social Work Clinic, where we have two dedicated counselors who support our students.
Students in the Honors Tutorial College have the option of living in designated honors and scholars housing, which is currently Washington and Johnson Halls on East Green. Residents are surrounded by peers from HTC and other honors and scholars programs and can select a roommate who is also eligible to live in the hall. Residence Hall staff work closely with the college to provide in-hall services and programming of interest to HTC students.
Whether in the honors residence hall or not, you'll have access to honors community events, like cookouts, donuts with the dean, yoga, meditation, and game nights.
What to Expect After Your Interview
Undergraduate Admissions will mail admission notifications and details on how to accept your place in the freshman class on a rolling basis, and most students should expect a decision by mid-February. The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships will send updated scholarship notifications beginning in mid-February on a rolling basis.
Admitted students should expect invitations to online and in-person events and online communities for admitted HTC students throughout spring and summer, including exclusive HTC-only admitted student campus visit programs tentatively scheduled for March 4 and March 31.
Bobcat Student Orientation will take place May 31-June 1 for HTC students, and there you’ll register for your fall classes, learn more about academic expectations, and get to know your DOS and classmates better.
