How to Apply

Admission into the Honors Tutorial College is highly competitive. While students who show high aptitude in other areas may be considered, most HTC applicants have standardized test scores of about a 30 on the ACT and/or 1300 on the SAT. If you choose to take either standardized test more than once, we will consider only your highest scores. HTC applicants should ideally be in the top 10% of their high school graduating class.

Freshman Admission

The priority date of application for the Honors Tutorial College is December 1. Our admissions process has four steps and includes a mandatory on-campus interview. Note: All HTC applicants are automatically considered for admission into the corresponding non-honors major at Ohio University.

Step One: Prepare and Submit an Application

Application and HTC Supplement. Honors Tutorial College applicants must complete both the standard Ohio University application form and the Honors Tutorial College application supplement, which contains three essay questions. The application and supplement are available online. You may apply to up to two HTC programs of study.

Transcripts and Test Scores. Applicants also must submit an official high school transcript and standardized test scores (ACT or SAT). Your standardized test scores may be submitted either on your official high school transcript or by the College Board.

When you request an official transcript from your high school, please have it mailed to:
Undergraduate Admissions
120 Chubb Hall
1 Ohio University
Athens, OH 45701

September and October 2015 ACT. We are aware that score delivery for the September and October ACT may be delayed by ACT Corporation for some students. Delayed scores from these test dates will not impact application review for most programs at Ohio University; however, HTC observes an earlier application priority date of December 1.

If you are applying to HTC, you can confirm with Undergraduate Admissions by e-mailing admissions or calling 740.593.4100 that you were not impacted and that your September and/or October ACT scores have been received. If you were impacted, you may submit an unofficial screenshot of your September and/or October ACT scores to, and Undergraduate Admissions and HTC will use them in preliminary review for HTC programs pending receipt of official scores. You will need to ensure that official scores are sent from ACT Corporation or from your high school guidance office on your transcript as soon as they are available. If you have questions, please contact Undergraduate Admissions directly.

Additional Recommended Materials. All 35 programs of study strongly recommend two letters of recommendation by the December 1 priority date. Please mail letters and other recommended materials to:

Honors Tutorial College
35 Park Place
1 Ohio University
Athens, OH 45701

Additional recommended materials are listed by program of study below. (Please do not send original artwork or other “one-of-a-kind” materials. Because of the number of applications received, it will not be possible to return your materials.)

  • Biological Sciences: Applicants should submit two letters of recommendation, at least one from a math or science teacher.
  • Business: Applicants should submit one writing sample, preferably a research paper.
  • Communication Studies: Applicants should submit one writing sample. The writing sample may be any paper from high school.
  • Dance: Submit a written essay on the significance of dance to your career objectives, along with two letters of recommendation, one from a dance instructor and one from an academic teacher or counselor. In addition, submit a writing sample from one of your academic courses of study (e.g., history, English, literature, science).
  • English: Applicants should submit a copy of the best paper you have written for an English class.
  • Film: Submit a portfolio of recent creative work and a recent substantive writing sample (creative writing projects fall into this category).

  • Studio Art: Applicants must submit an initial portfolio in electronic format for review with their HTC application: 20 jpegs sized at 72 dpi, no bigger than 8.5″ x 11″ each (612 pixels by 792 pixels). Each jpeg should be labeled with the applicant’s name and a number that corresponds to a document that lists the works with information about medium and dimensions. For example: Jane_Photographer_01, Jane_Photographer_02, etc.

Step Two: HTC Reviews Application

Complete applications received by December 1 will be reviewed by HTC to determine whether the application will be forwarded to the Director of Studies (faculty members responsible for administering each program of study) for further review. The Director of Studies for each program will select candidates for required on-campus interviews. Interview invitations will be mailed in late December. Applicants who do not receive an invitation to interview for an HTC program automatically will be reviewed for admission to the appropriate college.

Step Three: Attend Interview Day

Because of the nature of a tutorial-education, an on-campus interview with Director(s) of Studies is required. There will be two interview days: January 16 and 23, 2016. Applicants will be assigned an interview date. Applicants interviewing in dance, music, or performance theater will audition on their interview day. For more information, visit our Interview Day page.

Step Four: HTC Sends Admission Offers

After interviews are completed, offers of admission will be sent to selected applicants by mid-February. Interviewees who are not offered admission to an HTC program will be reviewed for admission to the appropriate college. If you have any questions about the application process, please call the HTC office at (740) 593-2723 or email Associate Dean Cary Frith.

Transfer Admission

Students are not usually considered for transfer into the Honors Tutorial College beyond the first semester of their sophomore year. In most of our programs of study, transfer applicants should apply by our December 1 priority date. If accepted, December applicants enter the College in January. In some of our programs, freshman may apply in April. If accepted, April applicants enter the College in August. Interested transfer students should contact the College office for guidance at (740) 593-2723 or email Associate Dean Cary Frith. Please note that HTC programs of study are small, and transfer admission is dependent on program capacity.
