Graduate Writing Retreats

Graduate Writing Retreats are open to fifteen participants who are writing theses, dissertations, grants, and journal articles. Any graduate student may apply, but priority will be assigned based on relevancy of the retreat theme to the writer's project and current stage of work. Doctoral students will normally receive preference over master's students.

Retreats run daily from 9:00 AM-4:30 PM and participants must commit to come for the entire retreat. Each day includes brief instruction on writing, short lessons on stress or time management, and plenty of structured writing time. We also have writing tutors available each afternoon specifically to work with retreat participants. All retreats are facilitated by Dr. Talinn Phillips, Associate Professor of English and Director of the GWRC. Refreshments are provided. Retreat applications are available here. Registration refunds will be issued for cancelations received by email or phone no later than 15 business days before the retreat begins. Please contact us with questions at gwrc@ohio.edu

Pushing Through the Long, Long Middle: A Graduate Writing Retreat
August 7-9, 2017
Priority Registration Deadline: July 31, 2017
Registration Fee: $50 (refundable if writer completes the retreat)
Are you "in the middle" of your dissertation or journal article and wanting some extra support? Feeling stuck? This retreat is for graduate writers working on any kind of long project (dissertation, thesis, journal article, etc.) who are slogging through “the middle”. It’s designed for writers who are:
  • stuck and unsure of what to do next;
  • struggling to figure out how to respond to a Revise and Resubmit or committee feedback;
  • struggling with organizing a long document or defining its scope;
  • needing to add some structure to their writing process in order to keep moving.
The nature of this retreat doesn’t lend itself to formal teaching but instead will include more one-on-one feedback than other retreats. For this reason, a pre-retreat meeting with Dr. Phillips and participation in a follow-up Graduate Writing Group are mandatory to ensure that we can meet your needs during the retreat.

Priority Registration Deadline: April 16, 2018
Registration Fee: $50 (refundable if writer completes the retreat)
This retreat focuses on writing the lit review, which for many of us is the most challenging part of the dissertation process. We’ll focus on how to determine the scope of the lit review (i.e. when to stop reading!), develop an organizational structure, and craft a compelling argument about the literature. We’ll also help you respond to any feedback you've already received. This retreat is designed for writers who:
  • have notes or a draft but are unsure about how to proceed or organize the lit review;
  • want to learn strategies for completing the lit review more quickly;
  • need help with addressing the committee's feedback on the literature review.
All retreat participants will receive ongoing support from the GWRC through a Graduate Writing Group.
