Maddie is majoring in Journalism and Global Studies. She studied abroad in Japan through the Musashi University Exchange Program. She has also traveled to South Korea.

What skills do you feel you've gained from going on a global program?

Going abroad taught me so much, independence, stronger communication skills (especially if you're visiting a country where you don't speak the language), and adaptability. Going abroad can be intimidating, but the skills I picked up molded me into a braver and more confident person which is now invaluable to my life.

What is one of your favorite memories from your global program?

One of my favorite memories from my exchange program was a weekend trip I took with some of my friends to an area in Japan called Nikko. Known for its nature and waterfalls, Nikko had these amazing shrines and temples up in the mountains. It was one of the last weekends of our trip and spending it with friends who I had made throughout my time in Japan was so fun and bittersweet. I'll never forget my time there with them.

What advice would you give a student you is interested in a global program?

I believe the most important thing to remember when thinking about going abroad or being abroad is that not everything is going to go as planned. Things change and that's okay! You just have to take a breath and roll with the punches. While maybe frustrating, things tend to have a way of working themselves out and it might even turn up better than you first planned!
