Alex is pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education. As an undergraduate student, she participated in the 10-day Costa Rica Ecotourism winter break program. The program started in San Jose where the group then backpacked through the Monteverde Cloud Forest, stayed in homestays with local Costa Rican families, went whitewater rafting, did a tour of coffee production facility, and finished with surfing in Uvita - along the coast. Alex was later able return to Costa Rica to co-instruct this program as a Recreation Studies Master's student.
Alex has also had the opportunity to travel to Australia, Japan, India, Morocco, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Italy, Scotland, Hungary, and Austria.
What skills do you feel you've gained from going on a global program?
Participating in a global program helped me to gain new perspectives and flexibility. Traveling can be a little overwhelming, but when you take a moment to look, listen, and learn from the people and experiences around you - it helps you to realize how wonderful it can be too.
What is one of your favorite memories from your global program?
My favorite memories from my Costa Rica Ecotourism program were - all of it! Backpacking to stay with our host family in Piedras Blancas, spending days rafting the Savegre and Pacuare Rivers, and then spending two days surfing and playing soccer with the locals on the beach in Uvita, Costa Rica. It was incredible.
What advice would you give a student you is interested in a global program?
My advice to students interested in a global program would be to ask as many questions as you can. If you are unsure about how to go about planning for study abroad, or unsure if you can do it, finances, etc. just start by asking! We are more than happy to help answer your questions and find the best path for you.
