Global Experiences: "I went to Berlin, Germany on a semester-long program through AIFS. I was in Berlin from the end of January 2018 through the beginning of May. I took classes with the FU-BEST program at Freie Universität, and lived with my host mom in a beautiful neighborhood in the southwest corner of Berlin. During my semester in Berlin, I also visited Amsterdam, Rome, Sorrento, Positano, Barcelona, Munich, Vienna, and Hamburg "
What advice would you give a student interested in a global program?
Don't limit yourself to programs that are directly related to your major-- study abroad can be a great opportunity to study things that interest you outside of your major.
What is one of your favorite memories from your experience?
I have millions of wonderful memories, but my favorites is taking walks and having picnics around Schlachtensee, the huge lake in my neighborhood, as the weather started to get nice. Spring in Berlin is absolutely beautiful, and the area where I lived was full of enormous trees and lilac bushes. I miss those walks!
Most interesting/different/memorable food you ate?
Döner - Berlin's most common street food similar to a gyro or shawarma. Over a year later I still crave it all the time!
What skills do you feel you’ve gained from going on a global program (personal, academic, or professional skills)?
I became immeasurably better at making quick personal connections with people, and at thinking on my feet to go with the flow of a situation so that it all still works out. I also got a lot better at asking for help and admitting to being lost or confused-- a skill that's very important when you're in a country where you don't speak the language!
