Foundation Courses (8 credit hours)

All students in the International Development Program are required to take the following foundation courses and should take them the first semester:

  • INST 5400 Pro-seminar: Fundamentals of Development - 4 credits
  • GEOG 5290 World Economic Geography - 4 credits

Development Core (minimum of 12 credit hours)

Development and the development process do not 

belong to any discipline, although many have an interest in and significant ideas to contribute to an understanding of development. This distribution requirement is to provide the student with different discipline perspectives on development - what are the questions asked, topics studied, and analytical interests. Below are suggested courses which fulfill this requirement, but the list is not comprehensive nor are all the courses taught every semester. Consult the course listings for each semester to determine if a course is being taught and the credit hour value of the course.

*This course is recommended for students who have a limited background in Economics and yet want to understand the role on economics in development.
**This course is for students who have a background in economics, specifically have had macro- and micro-economics.

Methods Core (minimum 8 credit hours)

Emphasis is on the acquisition of analytical skills, research methodologies, and practical techniques which allow the student to address the complexity and multitude of development problems in a specific context, and do so effectively, efficiently, and critically.
