Saki Taro Murayama travels from Japan to Ohio University in search of an education, becoming the university's first international student. |
1964 |
OHIO establishes the Center for International Studies. |
1968 |
OHIO begins its strategic partnership with UiTM in Malaysia. |
1969 |
OHIO hosts its first International Week to celebrate international students and increasing diversity at Ohio University. One of the most popular events during the week, International Street Fair on Court Street has been celebrated since 1982. |
1973 |
OHIO begins its strategic partnership with Chubu University in Japan. |
1979 |
OHIO and the Malaysia government partner with 38 corporations to establish the Tun Abdul Razak Chair in Southeast Asian Studies – the first endowed chair of its kind established by any American university with support from a foreign government. |
1979 |
Chubu University donates 175 Yoshino Cherry trees to honor OHIO's 175th anniversary. These trees line campus and the Hocking River. |
1987 |
Dr. John Kopchick and a graduate student in the Department of Biomedical Sciences in Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine discovered a hGH receptor antagonist, which is used to treat acromegaly, a growth disorder. Since the commercial launch of the drug, OHIO has received more than $75 million in royalty income from the license. |
1994 |
The African Studies Program is designated a U.S. Department of Education National Resource Center for Language and Areas Studies. |
1992 |
OHIO begins its strategic partnership with Leipzig University in Germany. |
1995 |
The University International Council (UIC) is established by President Robert Glidden. |
1998 |
The Office of Education Abroad is established, allowing American students the opportunity to participate in educational programs throughout the world. |
2004 |
The home of Center for International Studies is renovated and renamed from the Burson House to the Yamada International House as a bicentennial gift by Chubu University. Chubu University also increases the number of Cherry trees, first donated in 1979, to 200 for OHIO's bicentennial celebration. |
2005 |
Alden Library's Center for International Collections acquires the David K. Wyatt Collection, adding a significant amount of Thai materials to the strong holdings on Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Indonesia. Alden Library's international collections rank among the strongest in the nation. |
2009 |
Alumnus Venkatraman “Venki” Ramakrishnan, Ph.D. ’76 received a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on the function of ribosomes. Ramakrishnan earned his doctorate degree from OHIO’s graduate physics program with a dissertation on theoretical solid-state physics supervised by Professor Emeritus of Physics and Astronomy Tomoyasu Tanaka. |
2011 |
OHIO opens the Walter International Education Center, housing the Office of Education Abroad and the International Student and Faculty Services office. |
2013 |
International undergraduate student enrollment increases from 197 in 2003 to 1,054 in 2013. In total, OHIO has 1,881 international students from 114 countries. International students account for over 40% of graduate student population. OHIO celebrated International Education Week engaging students, faculty, staff, 5 campuses, and strategic partners. |
2014 |
The Office of Education Abroad changes its name to the Office of Global Opportunities in order to reflect the increasing demand for off campus experiences that are available domestically and internationally. |
2015 |
OHIO graduates from around the world return to campus for the International Alumni Family Reunion. |
