Extra capacity equals extra income for college

Onsite dining departments that operate central production kitchens often don’t make full use of the facility’s capacity, which means there’s extra revenue generation potential sitting there. At Ohio University (OU), they decided to do something about that, so a few years ago the school’s dining department approached local produce vendor Produce One with an offer to process products for it in the OU central kitchen. After all, the kitchen already had produce chopping and dicing as well as packaging equipment that often sat idle, so why not make use of it. Read more

Lil Chefs events offer a taste of the kitchen for parents and kids alike

While many Ohio University chefs have hosted demos throughout the school year geared toward providing students with a better palette and an improved knowledge of food, Production Chef (now General Manager of Retail) Chef Monchito Trinidad has a different audience in mind. Heading up four Lil Chef Demonstrations throughout the OHIO spring calendar, including events on April 2 and April 20, Trinidad aims to impart a familiarity with the kitchen to some of the younger members of the Athens community, as well as provide parents with an activity to learn alongside their kids. Culinary Services and Dean of Students Office pilot Bobcats Helping Bobcats Meal Bank Pilot

During the week of Reading Day, the Dean of Students Office and Culinary Services are partnering to pilot the Bobcats Helping Bobcats Meal Bank program. Athens students who are on a Traditional, Flex, or Block Meal Plan can donate up to three meals during the week of Sept. 30 through Oct. 6. Meals can be donated at any of the three dining courts and will be available to students experiencing hunger on our campus. Read more
Dining halls at OU adopt reusable to-go box program

Ohio University Culinary Services is rolling out a new program that should appeal to students who aim to live a zero-waste lifestyle. Beginning this fall, students can purchase a reusable to-go container, modeled after the recyclable boxes the dining halls previously offered and will continue to offer for to-go meals, according to an OU Compass article. The mission of the OHIO Zero Waste Initiative at the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs is to reduce the waste footprint at Ohio University thanks to support from the Sugar Bush Foundation, a supporting organization of the Ohio University Foundation. On campus, our team of staff and students at the Voinovich School partners with Campus Recycling, the Office of Sustainability and other university groups to raise waste awareness across the campus community.
