School of Music Chamber Orchestra Prepares for NYC Tour

Athens Kick-off Concert to take place on Feb. 27
Feb 24, 2014

The Ohio University School of Music announced that the Chamber Orchestra will be embarking on a special NYC tour to take place during OU’s spring break on March 1-4 that kicks-off with a performance in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on February 27.

“This is the first out-of-state tour in at least a decade for the ensemble, and I can’t think of a better experience for our students than NYC,” said Director of Orchestral Activities Steven Huang. “This tour is a chance for us to share fine orchestral music and the talents from Ohio University with a broader community. It is also a learning experience for students to see different musical groups and to visit youth symphonies and other institutes.”

The touring group will comprise the core string members of the Ohio University Symphony Orchestra, including 20+ music majors and non-majors. The concert theme is “Winter to Spring”, and the repertoire begins with Astor Piazzolla’s “Winter” from The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, and end with Vivaldi’s Baroque classic concerto from The Four Seasons, “Spring,” with featured soloist and OU violin faculty,  Solomiya Ivakhiv, who has strong connections to the New York and Philadelphia music communities. Because the tour will have a performance at the Ukraine Institute in NYC many of the works featured in the performance are of Ukrainian background. The concert will also include the Janacek’s Suite for Strings.

To kick-off the tour the Chamber Orchestra will have a free performance in Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on Thursday, February 27 at 7:30 p.m. Guest artist Sharon Wei, violist, will join the orchestra on this concert in a performance of Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola.
