Dance Minor Curriculum: History and Theory

The dance history and theory minor focuses on the growing field of dance studies that uses a dance-based theoretical perspective and other movement practices to analyze dance within larger cultural contexts. This minor integrates theory and practice as a means of heightening scholarly inquiry.This concentrated study helps prepare for employment of graduates study with a specialized dance emphasis in arts administration, dance ethnology, journalism or criticism, and dance in film or video. To become dance minor in history and theory you must have a sophomore standing, a 3.0 GPA. in your major discipline or field and come to the School of Dance to meet with an advisor.No audition is required. The minor in history and theory requires 30 credits.

Dance TechniqueModern, Ballet, Jazz or African 4

at the 2000 level or above

Dance 1700 – The Dance Experience 3

Dance 2700 – Histories, Traditions and Languages of Dance 3

Dance 2710 - Black Dance Forms

or Dance 355 - Dance Cultures of the World 3

And select three courses from among the following:

Dance 4550 – Dance Ethnography 3

Dance 4710 – Histories of Modern and Postmodern Choreography 3

Dance 4711 – Dance, Sexuality and Gender 3

Dance 4750 – Dance in Non-Western Expressive Cultures 3

Total Credit Hours: 22
