Josh Raftery was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He became interested in photography while in high school and initially studied forensic photography and sciences in college. Raftery received his BFA from Arizona State University in 2011 and has spent the last several years studying nineteenth-century photographic processes. The majority of his work is photographed analog and printed within the traditional mediums of the practice. His work examines the physical nature of what remains following mortality. Currently, Raftery is in his second year of Ohio University's Photography and Integrated Media MFA program.
