Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the School of Art + Design at Ohio University, celebrating over 80 years of excellence!

From its beginnings in the early 1900’s and historic facility (funded by the Ford Foundation), to the influx of renowned pioneers such as Robert Rauschenberg, John Cage, Allen Kaprow, Maya Lin, and Aethelred Eldridge, the School of Art + Design at Ohio University has established a commanding legacy of generating and working with professional artists, designers, and scholars. Our program has continued to uphold this benchmark of excellence over many generations, driven by outstanding faculty who champion a deep and continued belief in the transformative power and intrinsic value of art. Per the U.S. News national rankings of graduate programs, the School of Art + Design at Ohio University ranks 33rd in the nation, with its Printmaking program ranking 10th in the nation and its Ceramics program ranking 3rd in the nation.

I am intensely proud of how our program embodies a spirit of innovation that combines deep dedication to a vital learning community with a critical engagement to global perspectives and public discourse. Our students continually forge connections between traditions of visual art, new media, ground-breaking practices and cross-program collaborations, that inform, shape and reflect our culture.

Our long-standing community of intensely dedicated and nationally distinguished faculty establish ongoing mentorships with students that continue well beyond graduation. Additionally, our multidisciplinary and rigorous studio environment and our showcase of innovative Topics courses support our School’s mission, cultivating individuals who develop sophisticated problem-solving skills, critical thinking abilities, and the cultural, historical, social, political and aesthetic awareness that prepare them to excel in enduring careers and in life-long rigorous creative inquiry.

Along with our contemporary curriculum, which includes Graphic Design, Interior Architecture, Ceramics, Painting + Drawing, Printmaking, Photography + Integrated Media, Sculpture + Expanded practice, and Art History, our also offers a Museum Studies Certificate program. Our students also benefit from the extensive input from nationally recognized visiting artists and scholars, whose lectures, studio visits and professional connections make life-changing impact. We also foster the opportunity to exchange ideas in a globalized society through our well-established, international study programs in Italy, Great Britain and Hungary.

We would be delighted to share more with you about our School and look forward to welcoming you to our program and to our community!
