The Sculpture area changed its name to Sculpture + Expanded Practice in 2009. This change reflected shifts in the art world and field that were actively engaged by the students and faculty of Ohio University. The term Sculpture maintains a base in traditional modes of making tied to spatial concerns explored through a plurality of mediums.  Expanded practice adds to this a welcome to the breadth of possible creative outcomes –those current and those to come, that may constitute artistic practice and contribution. This show celebrates 34 years of teaching by Sculpture + Expanded

Practices Associate Professor, Marilyn Poeppelmeyer who curated this selection of former students: Amy Toscani BFA 1986/ MFA 1988, Amy Pryor BFA 1996, Emily Puthoff & Elena Sniezek BFA 1996, Joy Curtis MFA 2002, Heidi Bender Kaufman MFA 2009, Crystal Brown MFA 2012, and Courtney Kessel MFA 2012.

In a phone call with Duane McDiarmid, Associate Professor, Sculpture + Expanded Practice, said that, “Marilyn spearheaded the name change to the area for consideration; that ‘we’ were already headed in that direction”. Largely looking at how MFA thesis work was changing to encompass that of performance art, installation, digital space, data collection, and modes of presentation outside that of the gallery, McDiarmid said the name encompassed, “the notion of elasticity that didn’t exclude tradition."

In Trisolini Gallery, “over and over…” by Marilyn Poeppelmeyer, features a variety of work by the artist and Associate Professor. Floor to ceiling installations of drawings on raw canvas and wood show the diverse exploration of the grid that the artist has used over the years. These delicate renderings fill the walls in four different installations that respond to both the space and the material used. Multiple intimate framed wood pieces some with iridescent paint accents are situated opposite larger floor to ceiling compositions with raw canvas and framed pieces mounted on top.

A series of artist talks is scheduled for the Sculpture Alumnae and Marilyn. These are informal conversations between two artists and former student with her mentor. Join us on YouTube and comment any questions: https://youtu.be/Q8SYa9Gim8w
