The Singing Men of Ohio (SMO)

The Singing Men of Ohio (SMO) is an ensemble of undergraduate and graduate students from across the University who sing tenor-bass choral repertoire. Established as both a performing ensemble within the School of Music as well as a student organization that sponsors service projects, social activities, and makes numerous community appearances at university and alumni functions, The SMO enjoy a unique blend of professional training in music with opportunities for creative expression in the spirit of fraternity.

Guided by its motto, Unitas per Harmonium (unity through harmony), The SMO has toured the Mid-west, East Coast, Florida, Wyoming, and China advancing its mission of bringing men's choral singing and its rich traditions to an ever-widening audience. SMO performances are recognized for their diverse programming including spirituals, motets, French chansons, German and American part songs and folk songs, musical theater, barbershop melodies, and their own peculiar brand of high jinks. In addition, the chorus is known for its sonorous tone, attention to detail, and has been invited to perform in Columbus at the Ohio Music Education Association professional conference.

A Brief History

In 1989 Dr. Ira T. Zook was invited to revive the former Ohio University Glee Club tradition for the University. His passion for the teaching of singing and for men's choral literature was the guiding force behind the success of The SMO for eleven years. Continuing to flourish to the present day, the organization is proud to announce the formation of its new SMO Society of Alumni & Friends.
