Director, School of Music; Associate Dean

Dr. Christopher Hayes currently serves as Associate Dean in the College of Fine Arts, from 2012 to 2020 he was the Director of the School of Music. Prior to that appointment, he served as Professor of Trombone and Associate Director of the School of Music at Ohio.

As an administrator, he has been selected to represent Ohio University at the Mid-American Conference Academic Leadership Program, has completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University, has presented at the national conference of the National Association of Schools of Music Conference, and is a past President of the Ohio Association of Music Schools.

As a performer, Christopher Hayes has appeared at national and international events including the Newport Music Festival, Music Educators National Conference, International Trombone Association conference, and the International Trumpet Guild conference. He has performed and/or presented master classes at many universities including Indiana University, University of Louisville, University of Michigan, UNLV, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of North Texas. Hayes is principal trombonist with the Ohio Valley Symphony and a former member of the Ohio University School of Music faculty brass quintet "OhioBrass", performed throughout the region, including appearances at the Music Teachers National Association conference and Ohio Music Educators conference.

In demand as a clinician and adjudicator, Hayes' affiliations include serving as educational clinician for the Conn/Selmer company. He has presented research at three Music Educators National Conferences, at the College Band Directors National Conference, and has published several articles in the International Trombone Journal. 

In the summer, Hayes founded the OHIO Summer Music Camps, and has served on the faculties of the Steven Foster Music Camp in Richmond, Kentucky the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Michigan and in 2007, spent two weeks performing concerts at venues around Austria as part of the 31st annual Classical Music Festival.

Prior to his appointment at Ohio University in 2000, Hayes held similar teaching positions at Eastern Kentucky University and Murray State University. Dr. Hayes completed his undergraduate study at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, NY and at the University of Louisville, completing the BM in trombone performance and BME in music education. He earned the MM in trombone from the University of Louisville and completed his Ph.D. in music education at the University of Missouri.
